Hi. I looked at the blogs mentioned and both speakers would be really
interesting. I'd love to hear them speak. And what a good fit with the
conference theme. We'd be lucky to get them.

The facilities issue does sound problematic. A key consideration will
be how to get the group from one place to another without taking too
much time or losing participants. There likely would have to be buses
to take people from downtown to Pt Grey. Could SFU or BCIT downtown help
with rooms?

Hi SCETUG,
The Spring conference planning group met today. I have some updates:
1./ Web site for proposals/ promo/reg using the Open Conference System is a go. It has been tested and customized and functionality is able to meet our needs (submission of proposals, registration, payment via Pay Pal) . BCcampus will host the conference site as part of their support of this conference.

2./ Facilities: We have not succeeded at this time in securing the use of key facilities on the Point Grey campus. As a result, thet team is now looking at Robson Square campus as the site for the Spring conference. This causes some concern about affordable hotels and availability of rooms (tourist season) but we are look at what options are available and will look at booking UBC residence as an option for attendees. Also perhaps we can still hold a social event out at UBC Point Grey? We will investigate.

3./Keynote speakers: We are looking for 2 keynote speakers. As you know, the theme is "From Implementation to Innovation". We have come up with 2 suggestions of who we think are really exciting interesting speakers...who may/may not be available and who we may/may be able to afford! I'm sure many of you have heard of them or read about them (Stephen Downes & Brian Lamb blogs)

Hi Sylvia,

well...I think the online community makeover is going great. now that Fall workshop is done I've got a bit of time to help tackle what's on the list and so I can help with a few things...I think the visual look, streamlining of areas and re-labeling is looking good and working well. The rebranding of the community with new URL is a bit inconvenient but it is a much better a indication of who this group is ..so we can bear with things as they transition to better suit everyone's needs. So.. I hope people will post their ideas on what more they'd like to see ...I hope I can help to move things along in the right direction.

Get ready for the really BIG conference which will take place next year as ETUG joins the Canadian eLearning group to present "From Implementation to Innovation", a summer conference taking place from June 17-19, 2009. This 2.5 day conference will be hosted at UBC Point Grey. Planning is underway especially on how best to mark the upcoming 15th anniversary of ETUG. instructions on parking etc....Our registrations are at about 75 people as
of yesterday so this is looking to be quite a popular event for ETUG on
the island.

I don't know if we (SCETUG) can do a dinner meeting on Thursday night. I
did not plan to squeeze in a meeting between the end of the lab session at
4 pm (which I thought most of you would attend) and our pub
night...However, we could improvise and go over early to the Dinghy Dock
if you all are wanting to do this. Bryan you can advise if you would us to
convene earlier at the pub for any SCETUG business (communications
strategy). It is a full service restaurant so we could have a bite there
before rest of the participants arrive.

That's great that there's such a good turn out for the workshop! I'm
really disappointed that I can't be there, especially to visit the
Dinghy Dock (love the name.) Too many meetings at this end and the
Chancellor installation ceremony on Nov 7 ... I even have to be in the
procession of Senate members. Oh boy. I look forward to hearing about
the highlights from the workshop at our next online meeting. Sheila

Learning on the Edge: Exploring Our Boundaries is the theme for the ETUG Fall 2008 Workshop held at Vancouver Island University, November 6 & 7. How do you track and keep up with blog conversations? How do you manage your time as you engage in social networks? What are our limits as we integrate social learning into our work environments? When you do find yourself becoming disconnected from your networks and organized activities, how do you return to the fray? As facilitators how do you manage multimembership for your participants?

Many of us confess to fumbling along and we engage in multiple networks. Yet, many networks are essential for the projects, sectors and people that we work with, and for staying abreast of hot issues. Multi-membership and multi-platform overload is becoming a BIG challenge!

During this 2-week discussion at SCoPE we invite you to share tips for managing participation in social networks. This seminar is organized as part of the Facilitating Online Communities course mini-conference.

From that page you can find your way to our monthly meeting schedule, recordings, meeting dates, etc. We still have a lot to add and organize, but it's a start!

All SCETUG content and discussions are private to our group. You may find the SCETUG folders for uploading files and adding articles useful for your sub-committee work. We all have full editing access so feel free to add new pages, upload documents, create new folders within these spaces...whatever! And if you have any questions I'm always here. :-)

EDUCAUSE Live! welcomes MIT�s M.S. Vijay Kumar, the editor of Opening Up Education: The Collective Advancement of Education through Open Technology, Open Content, and Open Knowledge. Published by the MIT Press and the Carnegie Foundation, the book is a collection of 30 essays written by leaders in the open education movement. Kumar will discuss how open access can transform education and what the book�s contributors and their research can teach us. According to Kumar, �a look at the landscape tells us that efforts with open education so far have been largely confined to attempts at improving what we already do. While this is certainly valid, we encourage consideration of approaches that transcend traditional practices, organizations, disciplines, and audiences.�

Opening Up Education argues that we must develop not only the technical capability but also the intellectual capacity for transforming tacit pedagogical knowledge into commonly usable and visible knowledge: that a fresh perspective on resources and relationships available to education is required to enhance our readiness to take advantage of the opportunity presented by open education.

Liz Burge is a Professor of Adult Education at University of New Brunswick. For this session we'll be using a Q & A format that will be much like a radio talk show. For those of you coming to the workshop..

Email me food allergies or requirements if you have them and if you are NOT coming to Thursday's handson lab session let me know so I can make this lab seat available for another participant.

We are planning on one session with a backup plan of adding another facilitator/lab if this Thurs offering proves popular. Judy has lined up Andrew Marchand help us if this is the case.

Hi Everyone,
Bryan is away this week so I am posting this note to let you know that Grant Potter is our latest recruit to SCETUG. Grant just joined UNBC as their e-learning coordinator in the Teaching, Learning and Technology Centre. Grant has been active in ETUG... most recently working with Dan O'Reilly in the SL workshop we put on last year at TRU. It will be great to have Grant on board!

Now that I have your attention...here are a few reminders.
-Don't forget our next SCETUG meeting is Wed. Oct. 15 at 9 am...Our SCETUG room is being relocated to a new URL ....Sylvia or I will let you know what that is very soon so you can pre-test
